Power of e-Sports: MKU student wins KSh 0.5 million, scholarship in Kenya’s largest tournament

Meet Michael Ngwai, better known as Mcoasty, a dynamic third-year Bachelor of Commerce student at Mount Kenya University. He hails from Mikindani, Mombasa County, and is a passionate gamer.

Mcoasty has made a name for himself both academically and in the competitive world of e-Sports. His journey reflects the vibrant culture and resilience, blending his academic pursuits with his love for gaming.

For Mcoasty, life had been a series of hurdles. Balancing his studies with the pressures of financial instability, he knew that his dreams of completing his education were hanging by a thread. But when the e-Sports Tournament was announced, Mcoasty saw it as more than just a game—it was his chance to rewrite his story.

With nothing but determination and a fierce drive to succeed, Mcoasty poured his heart into the competition. He knew this was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, not just to showcase his skills, but to change his life. As he advanced through each round, his vision became clearer: this tournament could secure his future, covering his school fees and providing for other essential needs.

When the final whistle blew and Mcoasty was declared the champion, the victory felt surreal. The KSh500,000 prize money was a huge relief, but what came next was beyond his wildest dreams. Betika, recognizing the magnitude of his achievement and the challenges he faced, decided to go a step further—they offered to clear the remaining academic year’s fees.

For Michael, this wasn’t just a win; it was the breakthrough he had been waiting for. The largest e-Sports Tournament in Kenya in the recent past and near future,  had given him more than just financial security—it had given him a future.

As the saptain of his local team E-hub Gamers, his relentless spirit in training and competitive energy has seen him win tournaments since his entry to eSports. In a speech during MKU’s recent graduation, MKU founder Prof. Simon Gicharu announced a partnership that will see the newly refurbished Student Centre host an e-Sports gaming centre. This move, will give talented students like Mcoasty an opportunity to horn their skills whilst making a living out it.

His story is a powerful reminder of how esports can be a game-changer, turning passion into possibility and dreams into reality.
